Secure Your Store Against Fraud

Updated 3 months ago

As ecommerce grows, so do the risks that come with it, especially when it comes to fraud. According to Signifyd’s “State of Fraud 2023” report, ecommerce fraud was projected to cost businesses over 200 billion dollars last year. And the impact goes beyond just lost revenue. Every 100 dollars lost to fraud can cost your business more than double once you include shipping, operations, and marketing expenses.

That’s why it’s important to take steps to protect your Shopify store and your mobile app built with Vegacart.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through:

  • How to avoid accepting high-risk payments

  • How to use Shopify Flow to filter risky orders

  • How to set up Shopify’s Fraud Filter for added protection

Using Shopify’s Risk Workflows

Shopify offers built-in risk analysis tools to flag suspicious orders. When setting up an automated flow, you can use the Order risk analyzed trigger to filter out orders that are marked as high risk. This trigger uses the outcomes of Shopify’s Risk Analysis.

How to Avoid Capturing High-Risk Payments

The best way to protect your store is by reviewing orders before you accept payment. Here’s how to set up manual payment capture and use Shopify Flow to automate this process.

Step-by-step:

  1. Log in to your Shopify Dashboard

  2. Set up manual payment capture in your payment settings. This lets you review an order before charging the customer. It’s useful when you want to screen for fraud manually or automate it using flows.

  3. Download and install the Shopify Flow app directly from the Shopify App Store. (Note: This feature is available on Shopify Advanced and Plus plans)

  4. Open the Workflow app from your Shopify admin

  5. Click Create Workflow and then choose Browse Templates

  6. Under the Risk category, select Capture payment if order is not high fraud risk

  7. When prompted, make sure manual payment capture is turned on in your store settings

This workflow will ensure that payments are only captured for orders that Shopify does not mark as high risk. It will help you avoid unnecessary transaction fees and refund costs caused by fraud.

  1. Click Turn on automation and confirm with OK

  2. Save your workflow and you’re all set

Add an Extra Layer with Shopify’s Fraud Filter

For even more control, you can use the Fraud Filter app by Shopify. It’s a simple but powerful tool that lets you:

  • Create custom rules to block or flag orders

  • Automatically cancel risky orders or send you alerts

  • Avoid unnecessary chargebacks and losses

Head to the Shopify App Store to search for and install the app. It is free and easy to configure.

A Quick Note About Payments in Vegacart

Vegacart is built on Shopify’s secure checkout system. We do not process or store payments ourselves. All transactions made through your mobile app are handled by Shopify’s backend using your store’s configured payment gateway.

That means:

  • Payments are captured by Shopify, not Vegacart

  • You retain full control over fraud settings and risk workflows

  • Any rules you set in Shopify will also apply to your mobile app
